Artist's Statement
The Southwest: its mountains, valleys, deserts, skies and art, too, offer inspiration and intrigue to all. The uncanny beauty and sense of place here can mesmerise artists. As the days pass, though, I see more and more land around me succumbing to the ambience of generic America. This crushing intrusion on the ecosystems of the Southwest is jarring, and acutely heightens longing and desire for the area's natural habitat, so well documented by the artistic spirit of the past generations. At the core of my love of painting is the awe and fascination I hold for the land and the creativity of its earliest inhabitants. I am humbled by their work and find that they have contributed greatly to the artistic climate modern artists experience in the Southwest. In my work, I use watercolors and occasionally oils, acrylics and pigments, sometimes augmenting pieces with natural fibers and found objects, as early artists might have done. Although my subjects are not always southwestern in nature, I find making art with a focus toward preservation and awareness most significant and most rewarding.
My work is shown year round at the Glenn Cutter Gallery, 2640 El Paseo Rd., Hadley Centre, Las Cruces, New Mexico, 505-524-4300, and seasonally in other galleries.
